Metro Montage XIV

MARIETTA, GA – Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art will present its 14th annual Metro Montage Juried Exhibition. This year’s Montage features mainly Georgia artists with a few from across the country.

The Exhibition’s Opening Reception will be on July 19, 2014, from 6pm to 8pm at the museum, and pieces will remain on exhibit in the Museum’s Main Galleries until September 14. Metro Montage XIV is a juried art show that will feature a montage of subject matter, media, and styles from contemporary artists.

This year’s juror is Rachel White, the Assistant Curator of Education at the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She has a Masters and PhD in Art History from George Washington University and the University of Illinois, respectively. Her specialty and teaching responsibilities were in Modern and Contemporary Art and American Art.

Rachel describes how she interpreted this year’s Metro Montage:

In my opinion, Metro Montage is an exhibition predicated on chaos, where conventional curatorial frames such as theme or style fall away in favor of a rowdy mash-up of genres and media, tradition and iconoclasm. This all-over quality has its roots in the early 20th century, when artists developed the technique of cutting and pasting photographs and typography onto a support, disregarding the visual conventions of pictorial space and rationality. This method also resonated with the modern experience of moving through the urban environment in new modes of transport—figures, signage, lights, and logos whirling by.

Today, our interactions with the world are often digital, where chaotic visual stimuli are structured through complex codes into neat website design, Facebook feeds, and Pinterest pages. Bridging the divide between the historic illegibility of montage and our gridded digital platforms, I chose many of the works for this exhibition that spoke on spatiality and form in compelling ways. Three works in particular stood out amid the hundreds of submitted images for their explorations on how we structure and engage with our environment.”
