MARIETTA,
GA, –
The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art’s exhibition, Duncan and Walkowitz: Modernists of Movement
and Line, will feature American Modern Artist Abraham Walkowitz and his famous
figure drawings of Isadora Duncan.
The
Exhibition’s Opening Reception will be on July 19, 2014 from 6pm to 8pm at the
museum, located on 30 Atlanta St SE in Marietta Square.
The
museum holds in its permanent collection twenty-two of Abraham Walkowtiz’s
5,000 Isadora Duncan Drawings. Isadora Duncan is recognized as the “mother of
modern dance” and was a great inspiration to Abraham Walkowitz. Using graphite
and paper, Walkowitz captured and observed Isadora’s dance movements with lines
and shapes.
In
conjunction, MCMA will present Lines in
Motion, a collaborative effort with Georgia dancers and artists to
illustrate the creative process of Duncan and Walkowitz and to assimilate the
environment in which they worked. Lines
in Motion will feature four aspiring dancers from the Atlanta Academy of
Ballet and Dance in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Dancers:
Hannah Salyers, Mary Kate Billings, Britta Albertson, and Madelyn Handy
Artists:
Kelsey Moran, Ashlyn Pope, Rachel Rhule, Mary Yang
Terri Cole, Board Member of the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, explains
her inspiration for this exhibit:
"While recently conducting an inventory of the MCMA
Permanent Collection, I discovered a stack of 20 beautiful pencil drawings
and 2 pastels which all seemed to be of the same artist’s model.
As I researched the museums database I discovered the model
was dancer Isadora Duncan and the artist, Abraham Walkowitz. I was
fascinated that our little museum had so many of these drawings, and thus
began my search for more information about Walkowitz and Duncan.
Their story is intriguing. They connected through art, music, dance and poetry. Walkowitz captured on paper what Duncan conveyed through dance. They were both modernists in their individual contributions to the world. Separately each was significant but together line and dance became one."
